You may have heard the saying “if you do what you love you won’t work a day in your life” That saying is true. If you are passionate about something it simply won’t feel like work. If your passion is helping pets and owners have a more fulfilling life together, than career dog training may be perfect for you.
For a true dog lover there is nothing more satisfying than helping a dog owner and his pet work out some rough spots in their relationship. Most dogs that show up in shelters are only there because they were never properly trained and their owners just couldn’t deal with the bad behavior anymore.
Oftentimes it’s as much about re-training the owner as it is about training the pet. Owners and pets have to be on the same page and learn how to effectively communicate, that’s where a professional dog trainer comes in.
Dog trainers are needed in both personal dog (pets) and service dog training. Service dogs could be anything from bomb or drug sniffing dogs to seeing eye dogs to search and rescue dogs.
Each type of service dog will require it’s own specialized training. This type of training is very extensive, for both the dog and it’s human handler.
There are generally more opportunities in pet training.
Here are a few of the advantages of having a career as a dog trainer:
1) Excellent income potential. Many trainers make upwards of $100 an hour, or more.
2) Lots of career opportunities – with over 60 million dog owners, many of whom don’t have the time or the knowledge to train their dogs, the potential is virtually limitless.
3) Very low startup costs and overhead. There isn’t any expensive equipment you need to buy. For the most part all you will need is adequate insurance coverage, rent, and advertising costs.
4) Flexibility. You can decide what hours you will work and if you are going to have classes, private lessons or both.
